Can you handle the handle-less ness !

It has been a  constant effort for me to either go handle-less or create innovative handle details. It is now almost an obsessive-compulsive disorder!
While the most interesting details have been achieved with ply and veneer offsets , there have been a lot of materials we have been experimenting with!

A wardrobe in veneer recessed handle detail.

A storage unit  with a groove for a handle and chamfered edges revealing veneer detailing.
Handle offsets in ply detailing and veneer finish.

It is interesting to note how interesting niches can be created in wood to create camouflaged  handles.

Profile hardware  is fixed here to create  the handle for a kitchen counter.

Simple  cuts can be created in the veneer, either along the length of the entire shutter or  in parts to create various  eclectic designs.

Another one of my all-time favorites is this detail with a groove handle and a bottom ledge, A small 1 watt LED at the junction of the handles, lights up a shiny material which is the backdrop of the niche in this wardrobe, it may alternatively be replaced by any other interesting color.

A unique handle detail was created for this project in a solid surface finish to look like a peel revealing veneer detail under it, the side tables have a single peel to complement the design.

The handle for this storage unit has been designed with an embossed scissor symbol with a groove which can be pulled to open
this unit.

Various combinations and details are possible for top shutters and bottom drawers. For top cabinets, extending the shutter by approx. 20mm or creating a chamfered edge shutter are popular details.

Statement handles – either sculptural or chunky colored handles always add a different character to any given space. Below is a carefully crafted handle in wood and metal inlay which complements the ceiling as well as the wallpaper design.

Yellow chunky handles, made in solid wood and finished in Duco add color to a kid’s bedroom.

Various options when one groove functions as an opening detail for top and bottom handle.

While the above article, highlights some very basic ideas for handles, the path to discovery and innovation for deriving new handle details is truly intriguing and evolves with every project we take up!
